Unit 1 Lessons

Brief Summary of Unit: In this unit, students will learn how human-interaction results in changes in society.  This unit will begin with a focus on building community in the classroom and setting the purpose for learning through an introduction of “What is Social Studies”.  This will be followed by the observance of “Constitution Day” (observed this year on Friday, September 15) with a focus on how the Constitution protects the security of our liberty.  During “Freedom Week” (September 25-29), as prescribed by law, students will learn about the sacrifices made for freedom in the founding of the United States and the values on which this country was founded.  Also in this unit, students will compare the characteristics of major Ancient Civilizations as well as Pre-Columbian groups of North America and will develop claims about these societies.
